Project Objectives/Components

Designed to meet the needs of microenterprises and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), the SPEED Activity focuses on access to finance and business skills development. Through the SPEED Activity, USAID seeks to increase access to financial services, create and expand agricultural and non-agricultural enterprises, and strengthen legal and regulatory frameworks for business development in the SME and microfinance sectors.

Activities implemented under the four components of the project — SME finance, microfinance, business development services ( BDS ), and institutional environment — support these goals.

Project Tasks

ILS advice and expertise were delivered through the fourth component, Institutional Environment, where the primary goal was to assist the land registries and companies improve systems and service. Specific tasks included:

  • Review and analyze current systems and business processes in place at the Land Registry and Corporate Registry offices throughout Uganda .
  • Provide comprehensive recommendations for improved systems and business process reengineering for the office workflows
  • Design and deliver training on new business processes, and develop new training and operational manuals
  • Provide recommendations on hardware and software systems needed for automation of the new business processes
  • Provide business costing and ROI analysis for offices
